Hello from the camps
Getting a closer look on the border
Hello from Clint, a concentration camp outside El Paso. I’m here this week visiting immigrant detention facilities—or, at the moment, standing outside of one while a congressional delegation is inside.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), who turned this issue on its ear a few weeks ago when she called the camps by their historically accurate name, is the biggest name among the politicians here. We were expecting a bit of a Potemkin tour, but some of the abuses are still poking through. Here’s what she told us after our last stop at a Customs and Border Protection camp:
Today she’s visiting sites alongside the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, led by Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas.
I’m posting updates on Twitter at @KatzOnEarth, as well as Instagram (same handle).
Here’s the live feed I filmed a few minutes ago here at Clint, including my short interview with Rep. Rashida Tlalib (D-Mich.): via Periscope
I’ll be writing a longer piece soon.
In the meantime, please help support my work by encouraging your friends to sign up for The Long Version. I’ll be opening up options for premium subscriptions soon. Right now all this is free. The best thing you can do is help grow the list to get as many people reading as possible:
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to put my phone down before it overheats and explodes.
